歌舞伎の演目「桂川連理柵 帯屋」は娘おはんと隣家の中年男長右衛門の心中を主題とした世話物である。五世中村福助が演じるおはんは若い娘でありながら、15年前に亡くなった芸妓おかんの生まれ変わりであるかも知れない２つの雰囲気を作り上げている。
名取春仙は、日本画家として本格的な創作活動を行う一方、夏目漱石、島崎藤村などの新聞小説の挿絵や、石川啄木らの文芸本の装幀口絵等を手がけ、名を広めていった。
また、演劇界との結びつきも深かったことから、役者似顔絵も描いた。
大正時代以降には、版元・渡邊庄三郎のもと、役者絵版画を手がけて好評を博し、明治以来沈滞していた浮世絵版画に新風をもたらした。

The Kabuki play "Katsuragawa Renri no Sakaki: Obi-ya" is a domestic drama about the double suicide of a young girl, Ohan, and her neighbor, the middle-aged man Chōemon. Nakamura Fukusuke the fifth’s depiction embodies the essence of a young girl as well as suggesting she might be the reincarnation of the geisha Okan, who died 15 years earlier.
Natori Shunsen, while active as a Japanese-style painter, also became famous for his illustrations for newspaper novels by Natsume Soseki and Shimazaki Toson, as well as the binding illustrations for literary books by Ishikawa Takuboku and others.
In the Taisho era (1912-1926) and later, he produced prints of Kabuki actors' portraits for the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, which were very popular and breathed new life into Ukiyo-e print, which had been stagnant since the Meiji era.
