また、演劇界との結びつきも深かったことから、役者似顔絵も描いた。
大正時代以降には、版元・渡邊庄三郎のもと、役者絵版画を手がけて好評を博し、明治以来沈滞していた浮世絵版画に新風をもたらした。

"Michiyuki Tabiji no Hanayome" begins with a major incident: Kanpei, a retainer of En'ya Hangan, is secretly meeting his lover, Okaru, when his master is attacked. Kanpei is convinced that he has no choice but to commit seppuku to follow his master, but Okaru stops him, suggesting they escape to her family home. The contrast between Okaru, who is excited about traveling together, and Kanpei, who is tormented by his conscience, is striking, and the journey from Kamakura to Yamazaki is permeated by the two characters' conflicting feelings.

Natori Shunsen, while active as a Japanese-style painter, also became famous for his illustrations for newspaper novels by Natsume Soseki and Shimazaki Toson, as well as the binding illustrations for literary books by Ishikawa Takuboku and others.
In the Taisho era (1912-1926) and later, he produced prints of Kabuki actors' portraits for the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, which were very popular and breathe new life into Ukiyo-e print, which had been stagnant since the Meiji era.
