The Gyosho edition of "53 Stations of the Tokaido" is a part of Hiroshige's "53 Stations of the Tokaido" series with the title in Gyosho font. It was produced in the Ai-ban size, which is slightly smaller than the Hoei-do version.
Hiroshige was born in 1797, the son of Ando Genemon of Yayosu-Gashi in Edo. He loved painting from an early age and became a student of Utagawa Toyohiro at the age of 15. At first, Hiroshige painted pictures of beautiful women and actors, but starting with his series of "Famous Places in Eastern Capital," he produced numerous landscapes and became famous as a popular painter.
