口絵は本の附録として制作されたものであるが、そのクオリティは非常に高く、繊細な線の表現は浮世絵に劣らない。
桂舟は硯友社の一員として新聞・雑誌に挿絵を描き始め、尾崎紅葉の小説には桂舟の挿絵を欠かせないとまでいわれた。桂舟が口絵において質、量ともに第一人者の仕事をしてきたことは疑う余地がない。

Kuchi-e is an unobtrusive appendix to a storybook, yet its quality is extremely high. The delicate lines are as attractive as those of Ukiyo-e.
Keishu began drawing illustrations in newspapers and magazines as a member of Kenyusha, and it was said that Keishu's illustrations were indispensable for Ozaki Koyo's novels. There is no doubt that Keishu has worked as a leading figure in both quality and quantity in frontispieces.
