“Summary of Kyosai's Account of Painting” contains preparatory sketches on a wide range of subjects—including figures, animals, Buddhist imagery, and supernatural beings—demonstrating Kyosai’s fluid brushwork and rich imagination. It also recounts episodes from his own life, such as his childhood training, his relationship with his teacher Kuniyoshi, and anecdotes involving drinking and satirical drawings, offering insight into both his career and artistic spirit. His pupil, the British architect Conder, contributed the preface, and the work is also valued as a document reflecting the growing international interest in Japanese art at the time.
