芳艶は国芳の門下で、力強い筆法と彩色の艶麗さが評判となり、それを見た国芳は彼に「芳艶」の号を与えたという。若くして武者絵で才能を発揮して人気を博した芳艶と国輝は良きライバルで、刺青の下絵において競いあい、芳艶なら児雷也、国輝なら狐忠信と並び評された。
ところが30歳を過ぎたころから賭博を好み色街に入り浸ったため破門される。親友で博打仲間だった芳鶴の牢死がきっかけに再び画業に戻ると、師匠の国芳に負けぬほどの迫力ある武者絵を次々と世に送り出した。

Yoshitsuya was one of the pupils of Kuniyoshi. Since Yoshitsuya drew strong brushwork and had a good sense of the beautiful color combinations, Kuniyoshi named him Yoshitsuya. Tsuya means beauty.
He had a talent for depicting warriors and was a good rival of Kuniteru. They had competed for the technique of drawing tattoos. The citizen said, "Yoshitsuya is about Jiraiya, and Kuniteru is about Kitsune Tadanobu."
