木曽街道六十九次之内は、国芳が江戸から京都へ至る木曽街道（中山道）の六十九宿を題材に、各宿場に英雄や物語の人物を見立てて描いたシリーズで、風景ではなく人物を主役にした独創的な発想が特徴です。
国芳は豊国の門人で、当初は兄弟子の国貞等の人気に勝てずしばらくは不遇であったが、文政頃に発表した「通俗水滸伝豪傑百八人」の連作が評判となり、「武者絵の国芳」と称され人気絵師の仲間入りを果たした。その後は画想の豊かさ、斬新なデザイン力、奇想天外なアイデア、確実なデッサン力を持ち、浮世絵の枠にとどまらない広範な魅力を持つ作品を多数生み出した。

69 Stations of Kiso Kaido is a series by Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicting the sixty-nine post stations of the Kisokaidō route between Edo and Kyoto, in which each station is imaginatively paired with historical heroes or figures from legend.
Rather than focusing on landscapes, the series emphasizes dynamic figure compositions, showcasing Kuniyoshi’s bold and inventive style.
Kuniyoshi was one of the pupils of Toyokuni and was a late bloomer than Kunisada and other pupils.
Around the Bunsei-period, he published "108 Heroes of the Popular Suikoden", and it created a sensation and it made him popular. He was called "Warrior-painter-Kuniyoshi", and he became one of the most popular Ukiyo-e artists.
Since then, he had created various attractive artworks that excelled in high drawing techniques, fascinated composition sense, and fantastic ideas and characters, without sticking to the framework of the Ukiyo-e.
