伊東 深水が18歳（大正5年）の頃、清方塾生による郷土会展に「対鏡」を出品したところ、渡邊庄三郎の目にとまった。木版画にすれば必ず良い作品が制作できると確信した庄三郎は、新版画の制作を決意。以後、大正5年から昭和35年までの間に130点を超える深水の新版画が制作された。
その後も、日本画家としても文展に入選するなど早くから注目を集め、文展、帝展、新文展、戦後に入って日展を主な舞台として活躍し、日本を代表する美人画家として認められていった。

In 1916, when Ito Shinsui was 18 years old, an exhibition featuring the pupils of Kiyokata was held. Shinsui exhibited Woman Looking in a Mirror at the event, which captivated Watanabe Shozaburo. Impressed by the work, Watanabe decided to produce woodcut prints of Shinsui, ultimately creating over 130 prints between 1916 and 1960.
