幼少期に歌川派の祖・豊春の門人となった豊国は、10代で父母を亡くし、若くして画業に勤しんだ。黄表紙の挿絵に始まり、やがて役者絵で評判が高まり、美人画においてもその才能を発揮するようになる。
当時の流行絵師である歌麿の様式を汲みつつも、女体のなまめかしさよりも、日常生活の中にある女性の色気を描き、美人画に新しい流れを作り出した。

Toyokuni became a pupil of Toyoharu, the founder of the Utagawa school, in his childhood, and after the death of his parents in his teens, he devoted himself to painting at a young age.
Toyokuni began his career as an illustrator for Ki-Byoshi (a kind of storybook), eventually gaining a reputation for his yakusha-e. He then began to show his talent in bijin-ga.
While following the style of Utamaro, a popular painter of the time, he created a new trend in bijin-ga by depicting the sexuality of women in their daily lives rather than the coquettishness of the female body.
