Kiyoshi Kobayakawa, a student of Kiyokata, initially studied under Nanga painter Ueda Tekko before moving to Tokyo in 1915 to learn beauty paintings under Kiyokata. Renowned for his exotic depictions of Nagasaki beauties, his works were frequently selected for the Teiten Exhibitions. Kobayakawa also contributed to the Shinhanga (New Prints) movement and, in 1930, published the privately issued series "Kindai Jisei Sō (Modern Fashionable Styles)".
