「東海道名所風景」は、別名「上洛東海道」と呼ばれ、第14代将軍 徳川家茂が京都に上洛するにあたり制作されたシリーズである。芳年、芳幾、暁斎など、多くの絵師が関わり、将軍の上洛を庶民に広く伝えた。
周麿（ちかまろ）は、暁斎の画号の一つで、文久3年頃に使用されたとされている。
暁斎は天保8年に国芳に入門するも、天保11年には狩野派の絵師前村洞和に再入門。洞和は暁斎の画才を愛し、「画鬼」と呼んだという。安政5年に狩野派を離れて「惺々狂斎」と号し、浮世絵を描き始めると、戯画・風刺画で人気を博した。他に万延頃から周麿と称して浮世絵を描き始めている。
明治14年には第2回内国勧業博覧会に出品した「枯木寒鴉図」が「妙技二等賞牌」を受賞。暁斎はこの作品に百円という破格の値段をつけ、周囲から鴉一匹にその値段は高すぎると非難されると、「これは鴉の値段ではなく長年の画技修行の価である」と答えたという。これに心意気を感じた榮太樓本舗店主・細田安兵衛はその値で購入し、周囲を驚かせた。
暁斎は卓越した技術をもっており、人気絵師としてかなりの日本画の注文があったが、外国人からの受注がほとんどであり、作品が海外にあり日本国内では注目されてこなかった。
近年、海外コレクターの展覧会等が実施され日本国内でも人気が沸騰している。

"Scenes of Famous Places along the Tokaido Road," also known as "Joraku Tokaido," is a series created to mark the 14th shogun Tokugawa Iemochi's visit to Kyoto (referred to as "Joraku," meaning "the act of going up to Kyoto"). This visit was politically significant as it was part of the shogunate's effort to overcome the unstable situation of the late Edo period by seeking the support of the imperial court. Many artists, including Yoshitoshi, Yoshiiku, and Kyosai, etc. were involved in the project, widely publicizing the shogun's visit to the general public.
Chikamaro is one of Kyosai's art names and is believed to have been used around 1863.
Kyosai entered the school of Kuniyoshi, however, he decided to become a pupil of Maemura Towa, one of the artists from the Kano school, later.
Towa loved Kyosai's talent and called him a "painting demon." In 1858, Kyosai left Kano school and named "Seisei Kyosai" himself and started drawing caricatures and gaining popularity.
From around 1860, he also used the name "Chikamaro."
In 1881, he exhibited the painting of a crow, and it was blamed because he priced it at a high price, in spite of that it is just one crow depicted in the picture. Then Kyosai said. "This price is not for one crow. It is for the time of my painting journey."
Later this painting was purchased by Hosoda Yasubee, and people were surprised.
Sadly, Kyosai's artworks hadn't got the Japanese people's attention, spite of he has excellent talent and sense of painting. Therefore, most of his artworks were created for exportation.
