掲載作品は、近松門左衛門の没後200年にあたり刊行された『大近松全集』の木版画附録として制作された一連の作品の一つである。
題材となったのは演目『夕霧阿波鳴渡（ゆうぎりあわのなると）』で、島原の吉野、吉原の高尾とならんで筆頭と称された大坂・新町の遊女・夕霧を描いている。夕霧は芸事に長け、その優れた人柄もあって人々に愛されていたが、若くしてこの世を去った事もあり、多くの演目の題材となった。
島 成園（1892 – 1970）は大正から昭和にかけて活動した日本画家である。遊廓街の中の茶屋で幼少期を過ごしたことから花街の習俗に親しみ、モチーフとしてもよく選んだ。代表作はただならぬ眼差しとともに髪を梳く「おんな」、顔にあざのある女がこちらをまっすぐと見つめる「無題」、老齢の遊女をやや縦に引き延ばし毒々しい雰囲気を醸す「伽羅の薫」で、いずれも女が内面に秘め燃やす、強い感情を感じてならない。

This print is one of a series of works created as woodblock print appendix to the '大近松全集: published for the 200th anniversary of Chikamatsu Monzaemon’s passing.
The subject matter of this piece is from the play 'Yugiri Awa no Naruto,' depicting the courtesan Yugiri from Shinmachi in Osaka, renowned alongside Yoshino of Shimabara and Takao of Yoshiwara.
Yugiri, skilled in the arts and beloved for her great personality, tragically passed away at a young age, inspiring playwrights to create dramatic works.
Shima Seien (1892 – 1970) was a Japanese-style painter active from the Taisho to Showa periods. She spent her childhood in a teahouse in a brothel district, and was familiar with the customs of there, which she often chose as her motifs. Her representative works include “Onna (Woman),” in which a woman combs her hair with haunting impression in her eyes, “Untitled,” in which a woman with a birthmark on her face stares straight ahead, and “Kyara no Kaori,” in which an elderly prostitute is stretched vertically to create a somewhat toxic atmosphere. All of these works evoke strong emotions that burn within the hearts of women, hidden deep within.
