安政6年に守田座にて初演の「頼三升曽我神垣　増補富士見西行」、出来星の三吉を演じたのは三代目市川市蔵。大柄な体格で容姿も恵まれ、人気を博した。
上部には「お恵の露まつ蝶のちからかな　新升」という句がある。三代目市川市蔵の俳号は蝶升で、新升というのは五代目市川鰕十郎の俳号である。江戸っ子たちは、含蓄を楽しんだのであろう。

「今様押絵鏡」は、鏡に映し出された歌舞伎役者と、役者の詠んだ句で構成されたシリーズ。この中の三点をゴッホが所有していた。

豊国三代は豊国の門人で、まず国貞と名乗り、天保15年には豊国二代を名乗った。（実際には既に豊重が豊国二代を襲名していたが、自分の方がふさわしいという意図なのか当時は二代を名乗ったのだという。現在は区別の為に豊国三代として扱われる。）
作画期が長く、その作品数は一万点以上に及ぶと考えられている。特に役者絵・美人画等の人物の描写に定評があり、その作品数や勢いからして江戸浮世絵界を風靡していたことが窺える。

"Tanomimasu Soga no Kamigaki, Zouho Fujimi no Saigyo" was first performed at the Morita-za theater in 1859. Ichikawa Ichizo III, who played the role of Dekibosho no Sankichi, was of large stature blessed with good looks, and became very popular.
At the top is the haiku "Omegumi no tsuyumatsu chou no chikarakana by Shinsho”
Ichikawa Ichizo III's haiku name was “Chōmasu”, and “Shinsho” was of Ichikawa Ebijūrō V. The Edo people must have enjoyed the connotations.

The " Mirrors for Collage Pictures in the Modern Style (Imayô oshi-e kagami)" series consists of Kabuki actors reflected in mirrors and haiku composed by the actors. Van Gogh owned three of these works.

ToyokuniⅢ was a student of Toyokuni. He first took the name Kunisada, and in 1844 he took the name ToyokuniⅡ. (In fact, Toyoshige had already succeeded ToyokuniⅡ, but ToyokuniⅢ also took the name of Toyokuni Ⅱ at that time, perhaps intending to make himself more suitable. Today, He is treated as the third generation to distinguish between them.)
ToyokuniⅢ had a long period of painting, and some articles thought he produced more than 10,000 works. He was primarily known for depicting people, including portraits of actors and beautiful women. His number of works and popularity suggest that he dominated the Edo Ukiyoe world.
