Toyokuni was a pupil of Toyoharu, the founder of the Utagawa school, and was an essential person in the field of Yakusha-e (portrayals of Kabuki actors). He trained many pupils and brought about the rise of the Utagawa school towards the end of the Edo period.
Even with the limited color palette compared to Ukiyo-e prints of the late Edo period, the lively and bustling atmosphere of Edo is beautifully captured through the skillful use of line drawings to depict the surface of the river and the people. Shopping Guide & Information of the Japanese Prints
