豊国は歌川派の開祖である豊春の門下の絵師で、透明感のある爽やかな作品によって役者絵の世界を席巻した。多くの門弟を育て、幕末に至る歌川派の興隆をもたらした。
江戸後期の浮世絵版画に比べ限られた色彩のなかでも、線描による巧みな川面の表現や人物の描写によって賑やかで活気ある江戸の風情を見事に切り取っている。

Toyokuni was a pupil of Toyoharu, the founder of the Utagawa school, and was an essential person in the field of Yakusha-e (portrayals of Kabuki actors). He trained many pupils and brought about the rise of the Utagawa school towards the end of the Edo period.
Even with the limited color palette compared to Ukiyo-e prints of the late Edo period, the lively and bustling atmosphere of Edo is beautifully captured through the skillful use of line drawings to depict the surface of the river and the people.
