菊池容斎に弟子入りし、同門の渡辺省亭や鈴木華邨らとともに技を磨いた三島蕉窓は、人物画、山水画、花鳥画のいずれも秀で、アーネスト・フェノロサに称賛されるほどであった。
日本画のほか、工芸品の下絵、新聞や本の挿絵、口絵なども描いた。

A pupil of Kikuchi Yosai, Mishima Shoso honed his skills with fellow students Watanabe Seitei and Suzuki Kason. He excelled in portraits, landscapes, and flower-and-bird paintings, and was even praised by Ernest Fenollosa.
In addition to Japanese-style painting, he also painted drafts for crafts, illustrations for newspapers and books, and Kuchi-e, a frontispiece of the novel.
