国貞二代は国貞（豊国三代）の門人の一人である。嘉永3年には豊国三代の長女の婿となって国政二代を称したが、嘉永5年には国貞二代と称している。これ以降、師豊国三代後を継いで活躍。豊国三代が没した後の明治3年頃からは豊国四代を名乗った。

里見八犬伝のなかでも見どころとされる芳流閣での立廻りが描かれている。互いに八犬士の仲間であること知る前の犬塚信乃と犬飼源八らが宝剣「村雨丸」（むらさめまる）をめぐり争う場面。

KunisadaⅡ changed his artist name several times.
He was one of the pupils of Kunisada (=ToyokuniⅢ) and started to use the artist name KunimasaⅡ once he married the daughter of ToyokuniⅢ. And later, he changed his name to KunisadaⅡ and gained a reputation by taking over the ToyokuniⅢ's painting style.
Also, he changed the name to ToyokuniⅣ once ToyokuniⅢ died.

The scene depicts one of the highlights of Satomi Hakkenden, the battle at Horyukaku. In this scene, Shino Inuzuka and Genpachi Inukai fight over the treasured sword "Murasame-maru" before they know each other as fellow Hakkenshi.
