歌舞伎の有名演目を猫の世界に置き換えて面白おかしくアレンジしたシリーズ。本作品の引用元になっているのは歌舞伎演目「ひらかな盛衰記（ひらがなせいすいき）」の内、「神崎揚屋（かんざきあげや）」の段の一場面。元の演目では、百計尽き追い詰められた遊女梅ヶ枝が、つくと富豪になるという無間の鐘の言い伝えを思い出し、鐘に見立てた庭の手水鉢をひしゃくで叩くと本当に三百両の金が降ってくる…（実際は母からの情の金であった。）という場面となっている。しかしこちらは猫の世界。手水鉢は蛸に置き換わり、降ってきたのはアジの開きというのが面白い。

国芳は豊国の門人で、当初は兄弟子の国貞等の人気に勝てずしばらくは不遇の日々を過ごしたが、文政頃に発表した「通俗水滸伝豪傑百八人」の連作が評判となり、「武者絵の国芳」と称され人気絵師の仲間入りを果たす。その後は画想の豊かさ、斬新なデザイン力、奇想天外なアイデア、確実なデッサン力を持ち、浮世絵の枠にとどまらない広範な魅力を持つ作品を多数生み出した。

A series of funny arrangements of scenes from famous Kabuki plays in which cats replace the actors.
This work is based on a scene from "Kanzaki- Ageya," the scene of the Kabuki play "Hiragana Seisuiki."
In the original play, Umegae, a prostitute who has run out of money and is trapped, remembers a legend about the Muken-no-Kane (Bell of Muken). The legend says that you will become rich and prosperous if you ring the bell.
Umegae used a water pot in her garden as a bell, and when she struck it with a wooden ladle, three hundred ryo of gold actually rained down on her (actually, it was money from his mother's affection). But this is a cat's world. It is funny that the water bowl is replaced by an octopus, and what falls is a dried fish.

Kuniyoshi was one of the pupils of Toyokuni and was a late bloomer than Kunisada and other pupils.
Around the Bunsei period, he published "The 108 Heroes of the Popular Suikoden", which created a sensation and made him popular. He was called "Warrior-painter-Kuniyoshi" and became one of the most popular Ukiyo-e artists.
Since then, he has created various attractive artworks that excelled in high drawing techniques, fascinating composition sense, and fantastic ideas and characters without sticking to the framework of the Ukiyo-e.
