江戸時代に1200本以上の桜が植えられたことから、飛鳥山は桜の名所として知られている。
飛鳥山は「山」というわけではないが、上野から北西に連なる武蔵野台地の北端に位置し、石神井川が台地を横切るように流れて谷を作っているため、小高い山のように見える。
