This work was made as the title background for the documentary film "土に生きる," translated: Living with the Earth, shot by cinematographer Miki Shigeru in the farming village areas of the Oga region of Akita Prefecture.

Katsuhira Tokushi (1904 - 1971) was an artist who devoted his life to preserving the nature and customs of Akita through producing Sosaku-Hanga, the print category of self-curved and self-printed woodblock prints.
When ukiyo-e prints, with the division of process between the painter, engraver, and printer, became increasingly industrial, the Sosaku-Hanga movement was launched to revive the creative character of printmaking. Katsuhira's works are also classified as creative prints because a single artist carries out the entire process.
While working as a paper-maker and plasterer in the family business, Katsuhira was attracted to the paintings of Takeshita Yumeji and began researching and producing his woodblock prints by himself.
Katsuhira became widely known when he guided German architects Bruno Julius Florian Taut and Tsuguharu Fujita to Akita. In the early years of his career, Katsuhira produced modern works. Still, this encounter made him realize the beauty and irreplaceability of the unique landscapes and customs nurtured in Akita.
