Kiyoshi Kobayakawa was a student of Kiyokata, initially studying under Ueda Tekko, a Nanga painter, before moving to Tokyo in 1915 to study beauty painting under Kiyokata. He painted exotic beauty paintings of Nagasaki, and his work was repeatedly selected for the Teiten Exhibition. He was also active in the field of new prints (Shinhanga), and in 1930 he published the series "Kindai jisei so" (Modern Fashionable Styles) in private editions.
