「唐人お吉」こと斎藤きちは、天保12年に現在の愛知県知多半島で船大工の子として生まれ、幼少の頃に伊豆の下田に移り住む。きちが16歳のとき、下田奉行の命により、玉泉寺に滞在していた米国総領事ハリスに仕えることになる。きちは腫れ物の病となり三日目で暇が出されたといわれますが、異人と交わったということで周囲から偏見を受け、不遇のうちに生涯を終えることとなる。「お吉」の話は様々に脚色化され、戯曲、映画にもなり、今でも広く知られている。

Kichi Saito, a.k.a. "Tojin Okichi," was born in Tempo 12, the daughter of a shipbuilder on the Chita Peninsula in present-day Aichi Prefecture, and moved to Shimoda, Izu, at an early age. When Kichi was 16 years old, she was ordered by the Shimoda Magistrate to serve U.S. Consul General Harris, who was staying at Gyokusenji Temple. It is said that Kichi became ill with boils and was released on the third day, but others prejudiced her because of her association with a foreigner, and she ended her life in ill favor. The story of "Okichi" has been adapted into various forms, including plays and movies, and is still widely known today.
