新形三十六怪撰は、主に妖怪や幽霊を主題として制作された連作である。
芳年は精神を病み、この連作を制作する際には復活の意味も込めて画号を大蘇芳年とした。虫食い状の画面4辺はデザインされたものであるが、精神に異常をきたした芳年の幻覚を描写したという説もある。

“New Forms of 36 Ghosts" is a series of works depicting mainly specters and ghosts.
Yoshitoshi had been mentally ill, but when he produced this series of works, he changed his artist name to "Taiso Yoshitoshi" to signify his revival. The four sides around the picture, designed to look like insect bites, seem to depict the hallucinations of a mentally deranged Yoshitoshi.
