豊国二代は初代豊国の養子となり、文政８年（1825）に豊国二代を襲名した。しかしこの襲名が当時の歌川派の中で問題になったようである。そして弘化元年（1844）には兄弟子の国貞が豊国の名跡を継いだが、本来は三代目にあたるにもかかわらず、二代目豊国の存在を無視して自らを「二代豊国」と称した。

Toyokuni II became the adopted son of Toyokuni and assumed the name in 1825. However, this succession apparently caused problems within the Utagawa school at the time. In 1844, his senior apprentice Kunisada assumed the name and took the name "Toyokuni II" ignoring Toyokuni II, even though he was actually “ToyokuniⅢ”.
