Toyokuni II became the adopted son of Toyokuni and assumed the name in 1825. However, this succession apparently caused problems within the Utagawa school at the time. In 1844, his senior apprentice Kunisada assumed the name and took the name "Toyokuni II" ignoring Toyokuni II, even though he was actually “ToyokuniⅢ”.
