国輝二代は豊国三代の門人で、文久頃から国綱二代と称して制作を開始しており、慶応頃に国輝二代と改めたと見られる。国輝となって以降は開化絵を多く描き中でも鉄道絵がかなり多く、蒸気機関車の描写は他の絵師よりもずっと精緻に観察して描いている。幕末から明治初期の開化絵は資料的価値も高い。

Kuniteru II was a pupil of Toyokuni III. Around the Bunkyū era, he began producing works under the name Kunitsuna II, and is believed to have changed his name to Kuniteru II around the Keiō era. After adopting the name Kuniteru, he produced many kaika-e (pictures of modernization and Westernization), among which railway prints were especially numerous. His depictions of steam locomotives were observed and rendered with far greater precision than those of other artists. Kaika-e from the late Edo to early Meiji period also possess considerable historical and documentary value.
