Toyokuni

Toyokuni was a ukiyo-e artist active from the 1780s to the 1820s during the late Edo period and was the leader who steered the Utagawa school to become the most powerful force in the industry. He established a brilliant style that emphasized the idealized beauty of Kabuki actors, earning immense popularity among the masses.

His series Pictures of Actors on the Stage, launched in 1794, became the gold standard for actor prints by capturing the essence of the actors while portraying them in a more attractive, stylized manner. In the realm of beauty portraits, he also produced vivid and sophisticated works that reflected the trends of the time. One of his greatest legacies was the training of numerous talented disciples, such as Kunisada and Kuniyoshi. This fostered a formidable organizational strength within the Utagawa school, allowing it to dominate the ukiyo-e world from the late Edo period into the Meiji era.
