Gakutei Harunob

GAKUTEI Harunobu was an ukiyo-e artist active in the late Edo period, particularly renowned for his surimono. A pupil of Hokkei and an artist strongly influenced by Hokusai, he is noted for compositions of exceptional precision and intellectual rigor.
His style makes masterful use of advanced techniques such as gold and silver printing and blind embossing, endowing his works with an overwhelming sense of artisanal beauty. He also established a distinctive realm in historical subjects and bird-and-flower compositions drawn from Chinese classics and Japanese legends. His attention to detail is extraordinary, extending to every corner of the image—from the patterns of garments to the textures of vessels and objects.
Favoring a restrained and elegant palette, Harunobu combined color with the distinctive paper and special printing effects unique to surimono, thereby setting his works apart from popular ukiyo-e and establishing their status as refined, luxury works of art.
