KOHCHI has continuously reflected on the nature of art itself, pursuing an approach that expands what he describes as “that which exists only in between” within his own artistic practice.
The “in-between” he refers to may be understood as the space that emerges between—or even across the front and back of—layers of his striking, overlapping colors. Kochi perceives these layers as three-dimensional, possessing depth, and moves freely through them as if traveling within the work. Even when the composition ultimately settles into a flat plane, he remains acutely aware of the presence of each layer and the mutual influences they exert on one another. By repeatedly altering the order and process of these layers, he seeks to reexamine and rediscover them again and again.
