国芳は豊国の門人で、当初は兄弟子の国貞等の人気に勝てずしばらくは不遇であったが、文政頃に発表した「通俗水滸伝豪傑百八人」の連作が評判となり、「武者絵の国芳」と称され人気絵師の仲間入りを果たした。その後は画想の豊かさ、斬新なデザイン力、奇想天外なアイデア、確実なデッサン力を持ち、浮世絵の枠にとどまらない広範な魅力を持つ作品を多数生み出した。
善光寺参りに多く使われていた「木曽街道」、このシリーズでは出発地点の日本橋と到着地点の京都を含み、６９ヵ所の宿場を描かれている。国芳は宿場の風景ではなく、故事や伝説、歌舞伎や浄瑠璃など、当時の人々がよく知られる物語に焦点を向け、文化的な視点で木曽街道を表現した。

Kuniyoshi was one of the pupils of Toyokuni and was a late bloomer compared to Kunisada and other pupils.
Around the Bunsei-period, he published "108 Heroes of the Popular Suikoden" and created a sensation, making him popular. He was called "Warrior-painter-Kuniyoshi", and he became one of the most popular Ukiyo-e artists.
Since then, he had created various attractive artworks that excelled in highly skilled drawing techniques, intriguing compositional sense, and fantastic ideas and characters, without sticking to the framework of the Ukiyo-e.
During Edo period, the Kiso Kaido was a popular route to the Zenkoji Temple. This series covers the 69 inn towns spanning from the starting point in Nihonbashi to the destination in Kyoto. A popular subject in Edo art, Kuniyoshi subverts the ordinary landscapes by instead capturing the cultural heart of each town, drawing from stories, legends and Kabuki well known at the time.
