関野準一郎（1914 - 1988）は青森県に生まれ、近所には一世代上の棟方志功が暮らし、絵を描いていた。それについて回った幼い頃の記憶や高ぶる気持ちも、彼が絵や版画を志す一つのきっかけになったことであろう。関野の実家は絵とは関係の無い仕事をしていたが、版画を作ることへの情熱は冷めやらず、上京してからは棟方志功や恩地孝四郎など多くの師と友人に恵まれ、その熱を作品に昇華していった。
3度にわたる渡米後、日本という国を再発見した関野は、ため込んだ底知れぬエネルギーをもって東海道五十三次のシリーズを制作するに至った。
関野は肖像画も多く制作しているが、それに関連した印象的な詩が残されている。
「大地は母だ。死ぬことのない母だ。世界は君の足の下に生きている。二十億光年も。
若い人、苦しい人、さまよえる子羊。失意の時々、よき人との邂逅。
老人­­――よきワインの如くまろやかな人間。
この土の上に次々に生まれてくる人間、波、波、波、白い顔、黄色い顔、黒い顔、皆、違う顔、それを木に彫ってみたい。銅に描いてみたい、油絵具でも画布に向ってみたい。
生命の樹、ここにも、かしこにも、海の向うの遠い国々にも。足が動く限り訪ねたい。」

Sekino Junichiro was born in Aomori Prefecture, where the renowned artist Shiko Munakata, a generation his senior, lived nearby and sketched the world around him.
His early memories and heightened emotions surrounding this likely became one of the catalysts for his pursuit of painting and printmaking. While Sekino's family was involved in unrelated work to art, his passion for creating prints never waned. Upon moving to Tokyo, he was fortunate to have mentors and friends like Munakata Shiko and Onchi Koshiro, through whom he channeled his passion into his artwork.

After three trips to the United States, Sekino rediscovered Japan, leading him to create the series of prints based on the Fifty-three Stations of Tokaido, fueled by accumulated, boundless energy.
He produced numerous portraits. He also left behind
impressive poems related to his portrait works.


“The earth is a mother who never dies.
A world is living beneath your feet. For over 20 billion light years…
Young people, people in distress, stray sheep,
Times in disappointment, an encounter with a good friend
An old man…human being as mellow as wine.
Human being born one after another on this soil.
Wave, wave, wave, a white face, a yellow face, a black face, everybody, a different face, I want to carve them in a wood.
I want to draw them on copper.
I want to paint them on canvas.
A tree of a life, here, and there, in the countries overseas.
I want to visit them as long as my feet can move.”
