Toshihide

Toshihide was an artist who inherited the intense passion of his great master, Yoshitoshi, and responded to the demands of the Meiji and Taisho eras by evolving ukiyo-e in a modern direction. He refined the exceptional draftsmanship and almost blood-soaked tension characteristic of Yoshitoshi into a polished, urban intelligence of his own. Contributing numerous narrative illustrations to publications such as the Miyako Shimbun, Toshihide depicted women who radiate a distinctive beauty—combining Yoshitoshi-like sharpness of expression with the modern sensibility of the Meiji period.

While fully exploiting the power of the traditional ukiyo-e line, Toshihide also incorporated Western perspective and anatomical accuracy, composing images of remarkably high technical and artistic completion.
