Ryuson

Very little is known about Ryuson, to a degree that is truly striking. His documented activity as an ukiyo-e artist lasted only two years, from 1880 to 1881, and only nine works are currently known to exist. Beyond this, even his birth and death dates remain unknown, and no concrete details of his life or career have come to light, leaving him an artist shrouded in mystery.

Ryuson’s vivid contrasts of light and shadow clearly reveal the strong influence of Kobayashi Kiyochika’s kosen-ga (“pictures of light rays”). At the same time, however, his works possess a quiet lyricism and a mysterious atmosphere that are uniquely his own and distinct from Kiyochika’s. While there are devoted admirers drawn to this singular mood, Ryuson’s works are exceedingly rare.
