Ikkei

Ikkei was an artist who captured, with exceptional sharpness and humor, the comical yet faintly poignant turning point of an era as Japan shifted from Edo to Meiji.

Central to understanding Ikkei’s work is his satirical series depicting the streets of Tokyo during the fervor of the Civilization and Enlightenment movement. What caught his eye were ordinary people bewildered and flustered by hastily imposed Westernization. Amid new sights such as steam locomotives and Western-style buildings, he populated his scenes with figures who stumble, gape in surprise, or scurry about in confusion, comically expressing both curiosity about and discomfort with the new age.

Through laughter, Ikkei continued to portray the Japanese people striving not to be swept away by the immense tide of modernity.
