YANAGAWA Shigenobu

YANAGAWA Shigenobu was a ukiyo-e artist active from the 1800s to the 1830s during the late Edo period. He was a prominent disciple of Katsushika Hokusai and was at one point married to Hokusai's daughter. Inheriting his master's keen eye for observation and meticulous technical skill, he became a leading figure within the Hokusai school.

Shigenobu particularly demonstrated his talent in portraits of beauties characterized by a sophisticated, urban atmosphere, as well as in surimono—luxurious, privately commissioned prints. The women in his works possess both intellectual elegance and delicate beauty. Additionally, his period of activity in Osaka allowed him to blend the Edo and Kamigata styles, broadening the expressive range of ukiyo-e. He played a significant role in popularizing the Hokusai school's style and left a lasting influence on subsequent generations of artists.
