Kunimaro

Kunimaro was a ukiyo-e artist of the Utagawa school active during the late Edo period. As a disciple of Kunisada, he primarily produced actor prints and beauties that inherited his master’s style. His work is characterized by the clean and accessible portrayal of figures typical of the Utagawa school. In his actor prints, he is highly regarded for compositions that capture a fleeting moment on stage, as well as his clear depiction of costumes and poses. In his paintings of beauties, rather than over-idealizing his subjects, he often captured the genuine atmosphere and fashions of contemporary townswomen. With relatively gentle linework and a restrained color palette, his art offers a sense of stability that sets him apart from other artists of the era who favored more flamboyant styles.
