Kunifuku

Kunifuku was an ukiyo-e artist active from the late Edo period to the early Meiji era, and a member of the Utagawa school. Although his period of activity was not long, he is regarded as an artist who keenly captured the atmosphere of a turbulent age and the interests of the common people through the medium of ukiyo-e.

Kunifuku’s works vividly reflect the tension characteristic of the late Edo period and a strong engagement with events shaped by social change. In warrior prints, incident scenes, and other topical subjects, he favored vigorous linework and clear, easily legible compositions, prioritizing expressions that conveyed their content to the viewer at a glance.
