Introduction
Momoko Yamada primarily works with copperplate printmaking techniques to create works that reflect her distinctive inner world. When one views her densely rendered compositions as if traveling through them, one is struck by the rich layers of information embedded within each image. Yamada describes her process as a dialogue with the work itself: words emerge through the act of drawing, images arise from those words, and narratives then unfold from the images. The world that takes shape through this process becomes, in a sense, a place of belonging for the artist.
In recent years, Yamada has also incorporated materials such as cloisonné enamel and reclaimed wood. She notes that these time-worn materials influence one’s sense of time and perception, allowing a gentle, unhurried flow of time to emerge. This becomes a moment for Yamada to attune herself to the sensibilities and alternative values embedded in the materials’ past. The depictions of ancient creatures and scenes reminiscent of myth that occasionally appear in her works may well be ideas born from such dialogues with time and material.
