ToyokuniⅡ

Toyokuni II was a ukiyo-e artist active from the early 1800s to the 1830s during the late Edo period. Originally known as Toyoshige, he was the adopted son and disciple of Toyokuni I. Following the death of the first head in 1825, he succeeded to the name Toyokuni II, though his succession occurred amidst intense rivalry within the school, particularly with Kunisada, who would later become Toyokuni III.

His style inherited the refined and graceful manner of the first Toyokuni, and he was particularly celebrated for his portraits of beauties characterized by their elegant poise. He also demonstrated remarkable talent in the landscape genre, producing notable works such as Eight Views of Famous Places, which combined delicate lyricism with solid technical skill..
