Kokunimasa

Kokunimasa was a ukiyo-e artist active during the Meiji period (the latter half of the 19th century). He also worked under several other art names, including Baido, Kochoro, Ryua, and Kunimasa.

The defining feature of Kokunimasa’s work lies in his strong emphasis on Meiji-era realism in the depiction of figures. In actor prints, historical subjects, and nishiki-e based on contemporary incidents, his figures move beyond the conventional, highly stylized language of traditional ukiyo-e, instead conveying a heightened sense of physical presence and tension. His approach also reveals the influence of photography and Western-style painting, which can be felt in the immediacy and realism of his portrayals.
