YAMAMURA Kok

YAMAMURA Koka was a print artist who brought a revolution to the genre of actor prints within the shin-hanga movement from the Taisho period through the early Showa era. His greatest achievement was the introduction of a modern, realistic sense of individual portraiture into actor prints, which had long been bound by conventional formulas inherited from ukiyo-e.
In his representative series Flowers of the Theatrical World , Koka portrayed celebrated actors on stage not merely as theatrical characters, but as vivid individuals, capturing their inner intensity and human presence through bold, highly stylized brushwork. His works are filled with piercing gazes, the heightened excitement of the moment just before the stage curtain rises, and a modern sense of color that reflects the spirit of Taisho Democracy.
The prints produced in collaboration with Watanabe Shozaburo employ exceptionally sophisticated techniques, including zara-zuri to convey the texture of the actors’ skin and mica printing applied to the backgrounds. Through these methods, Koka fully drew out the expressive power of the woodblock medium. With striking clarity, he depicted the formidable presence of those who live for their art, elevating the tradition of actor prints into the realm of modern art.
