NARAZAKI Eisho

NARAZAKI Eisho was a Japanese-style painter and print artist active from the Taisho period through the early Showa era, who left behind many emotionally rich landscape prints within the shin-hanga movement.

Eisho’s style is characterized by a soft, gentle brushwork. He was particularly adept at depicting atmospheric moments in which outlines seem to dissolve—such as scenes of rain or mist, or the instant when night begins to fall. Eisho valued the quiet, moisture-laden sensibility inherent in nature and ancient temples. The subtle layering of his colors, though achieved through woodblock printing, evokes the transparency of watercolor painting and leaves viewers with a lingering sense of calm and reflection.
