Introduction
ICHIKAWA Shiori studied oil painting at university and printmaking at graduate school. Since completing her graduate studies in 2018, she has continued to produce works that focus on living beings coexisting within human society.
Human figures rarely appear in her works. Nevertheless, viewers often sense the presence of humans where none are depicted. While the artist considers her practice to be fundamentally concerned with humanity, she deliberately avoids representing humans directly. This choice reflects her belief that imagining beings with whom we do not share language allows space to reconsider relationships between people.
We have no direct access to the emotions or intentions of non-human beings. We can only imagine them. Ichikawa treats this uncertainty, and the time spent without clear answers, as a meaningful element of her artistic practice.
Painting and printmaking are chosen as means to hold sensations and emotions that resist language or complete transmission. Rather than presenting clear conclusions, her works leave room for viewers to receive something for themselves and to continue thinking beyond the image.
