At the time, it was believed that catfish caused earthquakes. The painting depicts the scene where Kashima Daimyojin, having captured three live catfish, tied ropes around them and was leading them to a grilled fish restaurant called Edo-ya, while five men—a carpenter, a scaffolder, a plasterer, a roofer, and a street vendor—who profited every time an earthquake struck, were pleading with him to spare the fish.
