この「今容女歌仙」は、本絵に当時の現代的な美女を、枠内に三十六歌仙の有名な詩を組み合わせたシリーズ。「今様」が「現代的な」という意味を表している。絵と歌が関連していたかは定かではないが、不朽の名歌をその当時のデザインに組み込み、当時の人々にその良さを伝えていたのではないだろうか。
