Shibata Zeshin was a lacquerer, painter, and Japanese-style painter active from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period. He learned maki-e at the age of eleven, and from the age of sixteen, he studied the Shijo school of painting under Suzuki Nanrei.
There is an anecdote that Kuniyoshi was so impressed by Koreshin's fan paintings that he asked him to be his apprentice and Zeshin gave him the name "仙真". Shopping Guide & Information of the Japanese Prints
