歴史的に有名な場面を描いたシリーズ。文禄5年、京都は伏見にて慶長伏見地震が発生した。加藤清正は石田三成の讒言によって豊臣秀吉の怒りを買い閉門されていたが、忠義を尽くして伏見城へ駆けつけ、秀吉を助け、その後許されたという。この話は人々の心を打ち、人気の画題でもあったようで、同じ場面を描いた作品がいくつか存在する。

小林清親（1847～1915）は、「明治の広重」とも呼ばれた、明治を代表する浮世絵師。他の絵師たちが即物的な描写に終始したのに対して、光と影のうつろいを情感豊かに描いた「光線画」と呼ばれる風景画を好んで描き、浮世絵界に新たな風を吹き込んだ。それにとどまることなく、まるで西洋画のような写実的な花鳥画や、ユーモアあふれる風刺に満ちたポンチ絵、さらには歴史画や美人画など、多岐に渡るジャンルを手掛けた。

This series depicts famous historical scenes. In 1596 , the Keicho Fushimi Earthquake occurred in Fushimi, Kyoto. Kato Kiyomasa, who had been put under house arrest because of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's anger over Ishida Mitsunari's false accusations, rushed to Fushimi Castle out of loyalty, saved Hideyoshi, and was subsequently forgiven. This story struck a chord with people and was a popular subject for paintings, and several works depicting the same scene exist.

Kiyochika (1847 - 1915) was called "Hiroshige in Meiji" and was one of the most famous Ukiyo-e artists in Meiji-Era.
Until his debut, Ukiyo-e artists generally unused the expression of the light and shadow, however, Kiyochika liked it and studied the depiction of them. His artworks blew a new wind towards the Ukiyo-e field in Meiji.
