高さ3メートルを超える地蔵尊を画面の中央に配する大胆な構図によって「お化け地蔵」とも呼ばれた地蔵尊の存在感を充分に示している。左右背後に描かれている浅茅ヶ原の松並木は明治維新の折に無くなり、地蔵の像は移転、修復を重ね、現在は台東区の松吟寺に位置している。

国芳は豊国の門人で、当初は兄弟子の国貞等の人気に勝てずしばらくは不遇であったが、文政頃に発表した「通俗水滸伝豪傑百八人」の連作が評判となり、「武者絵の国芳」と称され人気絵師の仲間入りを果たした。その後は画想の豊かさ、斬新なデザイン力、奇想天外なアイデア、確実なデッサン力を持ち、浮世絵の枠にとどまらない広範な魅力を持つ作品を多数生み出した。

The bold composition with the over 3-meter-high Jizo in the center of the picture fully shows the presence of the Jizo, also known as the "Obake Jizo". The rows of pine trees in Asajigahara depicted in the backgrounds were lost during the Meiji Restoration, and the Jizo statue has been moved and restored and is currently located at Shoginji Temple in Taito Ward.

Kuniyoshi was one of the pupils of Toyokuni and was a late bloomer than Kunisada and other pupils.
Around the Bunsei-period, he published "108 Heroes of the Popular Suikoden," which created a sensation and made him famous. After that, he was called "Warrior-painter-Kuniyoshi," and became one of the most popular Ukiyo-e artists.
Since then, he has created various attractive artworks that excelled in high drawing techniques, fascinating composition sense, and fantastic ideas and characters without sticking to the framework of the Ukiyo-e.
