中央の人物は大津絵描きの又兵衛で、実は国芳の自画像だと言われている。舞い上がった紙でうまく顔を隠しており、傍らには国芳の大好きな猫もいる。彼の手から次々と大津絵の主人公たちが飛び出しているが、よく見るとそれぞれ役者の似顔となっている。
天保の改革で役者絵の出版が禁止されたのを、国芳一流の機知で逆手にとった作品である。

国芳は豊国の門人で、当初は兄弟子の国貞等の人気に勝てずしばらくは不遇であったが、文政頃に発表した「通俗水滸伝豪傑百八人」の連作が評判となり、「武者絵の国芳」と称され人気絵師の仲間入りを果たした。その後は画想の豊かさ、斬新なデザイン力、奇想天外なアイデア、確実なデッサン力を持ち、浮世絵の枠にとどまらない広範な魅力を持つ作品を多数生み出した。

The central figure is the Otsu-e painter Matabei, who is said to be actually Kuniyoshi himself. His face is well hidden by fluttering paper, and beside him is Kuniyoshi's beloved cat.The characters of Otsu-e pop out of his paintings one after another, each of which can be recognized as a portrait of a Kabuki actor.
Kuniyoshi's keen wit enabled him to circumvent the ban on the printing of actor portraits during the Tempo Reforms

Kuniyoshi was one of the pupils of Toyokuni and was a late bloomer than Kunisada and other pupils.
Around the Bunsei-period, he published "108 Heroes of the Popular Suikoden," which created a sensation and made him famous. After that, he was called "Warrior-painter-Kuniyoshi," and became one of the most popular Ukiyo-e artists.
Since then, he has created various attractive artworks that excelled in high drawing techniques, fascinating composition sense, and fantastic ideas and characters without sticking to the framework of the Ukiyo-e.
