京都鴨川の河原は、江戸の始め頃より見世物や物売りで賑わい、やがて400軒もの茶屋が並ぶようになった。当時の納涼床は、浅瀬や砂州に床机を置くものや、張り出し式の床もあり、「河原の涼み」と呼ばれた。

広重は寛政9年、江戸八代洲河岸の定火消同心・安藤源右衛門の子として生まれた。幼少より絵を好み、15歳のときに歌川豊広の門下となった。初め、美人画や役者絵を描いたが、やがて「東都名所」のシリーズを皮切りに、数々の風景画を制作、人気絵師として名を馳せている。

The riverbanks of the Kamo River in Kyoto were crowded with shows and peddlers from the beginning of the Edo period, and eventually, 400 teahouses lined the riverbanks. Some types of riverbeds had a floor table in the shallows or on a sandbar, while others had an overhanging floor. They were called "kawara no suzumi (cool off ion the riverbed)”.

Hiroshige was born in 1776, the son of Ando Genemon, a fireman who worked as a fireman on the Yashirosu river bank in Edo. He loved painting from an early age and became a student of Toyohiro Utagawa at the age of 15. At first, he painted beauties and portraits of actors, but he soon became famous as a popular painter by creating numerous landscapes, starting with his "Famous Places of the Eastern Capital" series.
