英名二十八衆句は芳年と芳幾による連作であり、それぞれが14図ずつ描いている。血みどろ無惨絵の代表作と言われている。二十八衆句というのは仏教の「二十八宿」に基づいており、「衆句」イコール「衆苦」に通じ、地獄絵と捉えることもできる。
血の部分には膠が使用されており、当時は本物の血が使われているのではと噂になった。

芳幾は国芳の門下で、芳年の兄弟子にあたる。国芳が没した後に、芳幾は遊女屋風俗などを描いて幕末から明治初期にかけての浮世絵師の第一人者のひとりとなった。

The series of the collaboration artwork of Yoshitoshi and Yoshiiku, and produced 14 pictures for each.
The year of creation was from 1866 to 1867. The majority of the pieces take subject from the play, and are considered the pinnacle of Muzan-e, Ukiyo-e with cruel motifs.
The number "28" was considered associated with the concept of "lunar mansions".
The blood in the picture was made of glue, and it was rumoured that he might have used real blood.

Yoshiiku was a pupil of Kuniyoshi and he studied with Yoshitoshi. After Kuniyoshi's death, he became one of the leading ukiyo-e artists from the end of the Edo period to the beginning of the Meiji period by depicting the manners and customs of brothels.
