広重は寛政9年、江戸八代洲河岸の定火消同心・安藤源右衛門の子として生まれた。幼少より絵を好み、15歳のときに歌川豊広の門下に入る。初めは美人画や役者絵を描いていた広重であったが、やがて「東都名所」のシリーズを皮切りに数々の風景画を制作。人気絵師として名を馳せた。

Hiroshige was born in Kansei 9th, the son of Ando Genemon. Hiroshige loved painting from an early age, and at the age of 15, he became a pupil of Utagawa Toyohiro. At first, Hiroshige painted pictures of beautiful women and actors, but eventually, he produced a number of landscapes, starting with the series "Famous Places in Eastern Tokyo".
